Playing Piano by Ear

October 22nd, 2009

Playing by ear is a helpful and enviable technique that expresses fantastic creativity for many musicians.  When a musician plays piano by ear, they are improvising as well as adding chords that go with the melodies they are improvising.   Many people envy a musician that can play any popular melody on the spur of the moment.

It seems like they know just the right chords to play with the melody so that it sounds very professional and entertaining.  Many pianists would love to have this special skill to add to their skill of reading music.

Many rock and popular musicians taught themselves to play their instruments  by ear at first. . They probably learned casually on their own or with friends in “jam sessions”. And because of their great passion for their style of music or for a special song, they eventually master the song by experimenting with rhythms and the melodies.

By the repetition and practice by play by ear, these musicians learned their style of music and gradually compose a song in the style of music they like.  Playing by ear is also improved by listening to many songs in the style of music you admire.
